The Dark Knight Rises did it, and with flying colors. It not only held off Total Recall, it did so with relative ease, bringing in $36 million, $10 mil more than TR. After a less-than-stellar showing at the box office last weekend, TDKR’s now on pace to cross the $400 mil mark sometime late next week, a solid overall showing but still lagging far behind the success of its predecessor, The Dark Knight. It should end up with a six-week box office take of about $430 million. Fantasy-wise, this means it will have been a solid purchase (an IV score of more than 100) if a fantasy studio bought it at less than $350 million.
The other new release of the week, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, made $15 mil, about what one should expect from the third movie in this series. It will gross around $40 mil in the next six weeks. A good buy if you got it for less than $12 mil.
Looking forward to this weekend, TDKR will finally lose its grasp of the top place as the first Bourne film without Matt Damon hits theaters. Early forecasts have it pulling in $40 mil this weekend. The other big release is The Campaign, Will Ferrell’s teaming up with that bearded Greek comedian named Zach. It could also beat out TDKR.
